Dental Sealants

If you want to prevent cavities, brushing and flossing are the best ways.  It can be hard to clean every nook and cranny of your teeth, especially the back teeth that are used for chewing.  The molars are rough and uneven, and one of the favorite spots for leftover food and bacteria to hide.

There is a safety net available to help keep those teeth clean, and it’s called a Sealant.  This thin protective coating adheres to the chewing surface of the teeth.  It isn’t a substitute for brushing and flossing, but it can help to keep the cavities from forming and can even stop the early stages of decay.

Sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of decay in molars by almost 80%.  This is especially true when discussing your child’s dental health.  In 2016, the Center for Disease Control reported that only 43% of children ages 6-11 have sealants.  You may have questions about sealants, so don’t worry!  We have answers!

How do Sealants Work?

Think of a sealant as a raincoat for your teeth. Cosmetic Dentist Alabama Robertsdale Cavity-causing bacteria is in everyone’s mouth.  When these bacteria meet leftover food particles, they start to produce acids that create holes in the teeth.  These holes are called cavities.  When a sealant has been applied, it will keep the bits of food out and also stop the bacteria and acid from settling on the teeth (just like a raincoat keeps you clean and dry).

Who can get Sealants?

Children and Adults can benefit!  The earlier you get them, the better.  The first molars appear around age 6, and the second molars break through around age 12.  Sealing these teeth as soon as they come in can keep them cavity-free from the beginning, which will save you time and money!  As your dentist if sealants are an option for you!  Cosmetic Dentist Alabama Robertsdale
