Composite Fillings Blog Series – Post 3
Composite Filling Process: Step-by-Step
If you’ve been told you need a filling, you might be wondering what exactly goes into the process. At Sweet Water Dentistry, we make the experience as simple, gentle, and efficient as possible. Composite fillings are a safe and natural-looking way to restore your tooth. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand what to expect.
Step 1: Examination and Diagnosis
Your appointment starts with a thorough examination of your mouth. Using digital X-rays and other tools, Dr. Greer will check the extent of the decay or damage and determine if a composite filling is the best solution.
Step 2: Local Anesthesia
To ensure your comfort, a local anesthetic is applied to numb the area around the affected tooth. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during this step.
Step 3: Removing the Decay
Once the area is numb, the decayed portion of the tooth is gently removed using specialized dental instruments. Our goal is to preserve as much of your healthy tooth structure as possible.
Step 4: Tooth Preparation
After the decay is removed, the cavity is cleaned and dried. A bonding agent is then applied to the prepared surface of the tooth to help the composite material adhere securely.
Step 5: Layering the Composite Resin
The composite material is applied in layers. Each layer is shaped and then hardened using a special curing light. This process is repeated several times until the filling has been built up to match the natural contours of your tooth.
Step 6: Shaping and Polishing
Once the filling is fully cured, Dr. Greer will trim and shape it to fit your bite perfectly. The final step involves polishing the tooth to ensure a smooth, natural appearance and feel.
Step 7: Final Check
Your dentist will ask you to bite down and test your bite alignment. If any adjustments are needed, they will be made on the spot to ensure comfort and proper function.
How Long Does It Take?
The entire process typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth, depending on the size and complexity of the cavity. Composite fillings are generally completed in a single visit.
What to Expect Afterward
You may experience slight sensitivity to hot or cold foods for a day or two, which is completely normal. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient if any discomfort arises. Most patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after their appointment.
Caring for Your Composite Filling
- Brush twice a day and floss daily
- Avoid chewing hard objects (like ice)
- Attend regular dental checkups and cleanings
With good oral hygiene, your composite filling can last for many years.
