What You Need to Know About Your Tot’s Teeth

When Teeth Erupt

When your baby comes into this world, they have 20 teeth below the gums.  They start to erupt usually between 6 months and a year.  Children should have most of their teeth by the time they are 3 years of age.

Teething Signs and Symptoms

Teething is something every baby and parent will go through.  When their teeth come in, babies can become fussy, sleepless, irritable, lose their appetite and even drool more than usual.  It is a common misconception that diarrhea, rashes, and fever are caused by teething.  This is not true.  If your baby is experiencing fever or diarrhea while they are teething or continues to be cranky and uncomfortable, it’s time to call your pediatrician.

When to Start Brushing with Toothpaste

Tooth decay can begin before the teeth appear.  When the pearly whites start peeking out when your baby smiles, it’s time to pick up a tube of fluoride toothpaste.  Make sure to find one with the ADA Seal. Cosmetic Dentistry Mobile AL

How Much Toothpaste to Use

It won’t take much to clean their teeth.  Until your child can brush on their own (and do it well), you need to brush their teeth twice a day with a child-size toothbrush.  If your child is under 3, use a small smear of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).  If older than 3 years, use a pea-sized amount.

Their first year of life is made up of very exciting firsts!  Their dental visit should take place after the first tooth appears, but no later than the first birthday.  It may seem early, but cavities can start this young!  So better to be safe!  Cosmetic Dentistry Mobile AL
