All About Fairhope & What You Should Know
Best Small Southern Town
While it is not the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of Alabama, Fairhope is the one place in the United States that you should go to if you are stressed and you need to unwind.
With a population of only 17,000, there are only a few places in the United States that are as scenic. It has a charming and walkable downtown with streets that are lined with oaks. The place also boasts of antebellum homes, you know, 19th-century houses.
Fairhope sits on bluffs overlooking Mobile Bay, which means that you will always have a view of the water wherever you may be in the area. While it does not have a beach as Florida does, it has, however, a very laidback vibe that can definitely lower your blood pressure.
But aside from the totally relaxing atmosphere, there are other reasons why you should visit Fairhope.
There is the Grand Hotel Marriott. While it’s a global brand, the Marriott Hotel you will find in Fairhope is deeply rooted in history. It was built in 1847 and was used as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. The hotel still honors its history with a ceremonial firing of the cannon at 4 PM. History aside, though, you will find the sunsets are spectacularly breathtaking, and you can take it all in from the brick path surrounding the Marriott or from a long fishing pier that goes out into Mobile Bay.
Of course, taking a trip down history is not the only thing you can do in Fairhope. When you are there, rent a bike. Better yet, bring your own. The place is a biking town that has trails wind along the historic neighborhoods and along the coast.
If you are into food specials (who isn’t?), go to Panini Petes. It’s a local cafe that is an institution in the area. Their beignets are to die for, not to mention the paninis that are just as good. Go there for breakfast and sit in the courtyard under the large oak tree. Then go for a stroll through town.
If you are into books, there is another local institution called Page & Palette. It boasts of signed copies of books by local authors. And of course, it has a knowledgeable and charming staff who can make recommendations.
Once you’ve bought your books, book a trip to the Mobile Tensaw Delta, which is 30 minutes away from Fairhope. It has 260,000 acres of an ecosystem that’s dubbed one of the most diverse and beautiful ecosystems in the country. Make sure to book your tour with 17 Turtles Outfitters.
As you can see from above, there aren’t that many things to do and places to see in Fairhope, however, they are enough to keep you occupied during your stay. You might be surprised to know there are actually people out there who travel there just to relax and do nothing. We know that’s what you fancy doing now.
