What is a dental crown?

If you have a tooth that is cracked, discolored, severely decayed, or misshapen, you may need a crown on that tooth. A crown (commonly called a “cap”) is a restorative cover that takes the place of a tooth that has been damaged or decayed. Crowns are also sometimes used to improve the look of your teeth and improve your smile as well. These restorative covers are used when a tooth has been so destroyed by bacteria and decay that it cannot be corrected with just a simple filling. Here at Dr. Phillip Greer’s office, Sweet Water Dentistry in Fairhope, AL, we offer beautiful, full porcelain crowns. The best part about our crowns is that they are made in the office, so you can receive your crown in one day!

Dr. Phillip Greer can create a custom crown that looks completely natural and blends in perfectly with your other teeth. He will use a shade guide and go over the different shades with you so that you can choose the shade that fits your needs. At our office, we use a ceramic machine to scan the mouth to aid in the making of your crown. Once you receive your crown, Dr. Greer at Sweet Water Dentistry will explain how you to protect your crown and your natural teeth. You will need to continue to practice good oral hygiene and treat your crown just like your natural teeth.

After the procedure of preparing your tooth to receive the crown, it takes about an hour (per crown) to make. Once the crown is finished, you will return to the office, and you will have your crown permanently cemented into your mouth. You are going to want to make sure that you take grey care of your crown just as if it were your real tooth. To avoid damaging your crown, you should avoid chewing ice and other hard foods. It is recommended that you brush, floss, and use mouthwash at least twice a day. If you think you may need a dental crown, and you would like more information or would like to set up an appointment at Sweet Water Dentistry, please don’t hesitate to call our office!
