Your Smile Deserves Gentle Care
Tooth extractions are common and effective, but your recovery depends on how well you care for your mouth afterward. At Sweet Water Dentistry, we want to empower you with everything you need to protect your smile and promote quick healing.
In this blog, we’ll cover how to care for your mouth after an extraction, including cleaning tips, what to eat, what to avoid, and how to protect the area from complications.
Why Aftercare Matters
After a tooth is removed, your body needs time to heal the socket and surrounding tissues. The first few days are especially important to prevent:
- Dry socket
- Infection
- Excess swelling or bleeding
- Delayed healing
Good aftercare helps ensure:
✅ Faster recovery
✅ Less pain
✅ Better long-term oral health
How to Keep the Area Clean
🪥 First 24 Hours:
- Don’t brush near the extraction site.
- Don’t rinse, spit, or swish forcefully.
- Let the blood clot form undisturbed.
🪥 Day 2 and Beyond:
- Begin gently rinsing with warm salt water (½ tsp salt in 8 oz water).
- Resume brushing and flossing the rest of your teeth — just be gentle near the socket.
- Avoid using mouthwash with alcohol unless directed by your dentist.
Eating After a Tooth Extraction
Your diet plays a big role in recovery. Stick to soft, soothing foods for the first several days.
✅ Best Foods:
- Applesauce
- Mashed potatoes
- Yogurt
- Smoothies (no straws!)
- Soup (lukewarm only)
- Scrambled eggs
- Soft rice or pasta
🚫 Avoid:
- Crunchy foods (chips, nuts)
- Spicy or acidic items
- Hot beverages (can dissolve the clot)
- Carbonated drinks
- Sticky foods like caramel or gum
- Anything that requires sucking (no straws or popsicles)
Tip: Chew on the opposite side of your mouth to protect the socket.
Rest Is Recovery
Take it easy for at least 24–48 hours:
- Avoid intense exercise or heavy lifting
- Keep your head elevated while sleeping
- Don’t bend over or put pressure on your face
Resting allows your body to focus on healing — and it helps prevent complications like dry socket.
Managing Pain and Swelling
It’s normal to experience some discomfort after a tooth is removed. Here’s how to stay ahead of it:
- Use ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed
- Apply cold compresses in 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling
- Avoid smoking or alcohol, which can slow healing
If you were prescribed antibiotics or a special rinse, follow the full course — even if you start feeling better quickly.
What to Watch Out For
Healing should be smooth, but it’s important to know the warning signs of a problem. Contact us if you experience:
🚨 Severe or increasing pain after 3 days
🚨 Bleeding that won’t stop
🚨 Pus or unusual discharge
🚨 Fever or chills
🚨 Bad breath or a foul taste that doesn’t go away
We’re always just a call or text away — no concern is too small.
Can I Brush and Floss Normally Again?
Yes — within a few days. Just take care not to disturb the socket. After a week or so, you can gently resume your regular oral hygiene routine.
If you had stitches placed, we’ll let you know if they’re dissolvable or if you need a follow-up visit.
Replacing the Missing Tooth
Once the site is healed, we’ll talk with you about options for replacing the missing tooth (if needed):
- Dental implants
- Bridges
- Partial dentures
Replacing the tooth helps maintain bite function, prevent shifting, and preserve bone.
